What are Veneers and Who are They For?

For patients whose teeth are discolored, chipped, misaligned, or worn down, dental veneers provide a great solution. We have patients of all ages and backgrounds who enjoy the benefits of veneers. Composed of a resin or porcelain composite, they fit over the teeth. They’re thin white shells that correct misshapen or stained teeth. Sculpted to meet your needs, they make for a great way to get that straight, white smile you’ve always wanted.

Because they’re personalized to the needs of each patient, we can help you decide what option best suits you. They can either match the color of your surrounding teeth, or they can be whiter if you’d like to increase the whiteness of your whole smile. Veneers in Lenexa are crafted from a type of dental porcelain that looks just like a natural tooth. It is practically impossible to distinguish a normal white tooth from a veneer.

For a fast, permanent answer to any cosmetic dental problem, choose porcelain veneers.

Request an Appointment

You should plan on having two appointments to get your veneers placed. As you receive the treatment, our Lenexa cosmetic dentist, Dr. Viloria, will walk you through the process. When you come into the office, you can expect the placement procedure to happen like this:

  1. X-Rays and Impressions

In the first appointment we’ll need to x-ray your teeth and get an impression to send to the lab. There, trained technicians will craft the veneer to your needs and specifications.

  2. Tooth Preparation

We will also clean and prepare your tooth, and determine what shade works best for your veneer. To make a space for the veneer to fit, we’ll remove a very fine layer of enamel from the surface of the tooth. For more sensitive patients, anesthesia can be applied at this point, though most patients find that it is not necessary.

  3. Temporary Veneer Application

While the impression for the tooth is made in the lab, we will apply a temporary veneer to fill the space until the permanent one comes.

  4. Veneer Placement

When we have received the porcelain veneer we’ll have you come back for the second half of the procedure. Here, we’ll remove the temporary veneer and clean and prepare the tooth once more. We will then etch the veneer, rinse it, and allow it to dry. After placing the adhesive, we’ll use the cement to place the veneer in the correct position. The veneer will match the color and the shape of your tooth.

  5. Cementing and Curing

We then will cure the veneer with light for one minute so that it becomes completely bonded with the tooth.

  6. Cleaning and Polishing

After the cement is fully bonded, we will remove excess material, polish the veneer, and let you rinse your mouth out.

Pros: Veneers are an extremely successful treatment that has made many happy recipients in its time. Here’s a recap of a few.

How Should I Take Care of My Veneers?

Veneers are extremely durable and only need to be replaced every 10 years or so. Veneers are resistant to even coffee and nicotine stains, so you’ll find that this is a long-lasting solution. Maintaining the veneers is also quite simple. Just like you do for your normal teeth, brush them and floss daily to preserve your pristine smile. Generally, if you have porcelain veneers, it’s a good idea to brush with non-abrasive toothpaste.

Consult with your Lenexa cosmetic dentist to decide what kind of checkup plan works best for you. We want to make sure that you’re comfortable and satisfied! These appointments will help us answer your questions and make sure that all is going well. In addition, veneers should be a polished with a non-abrasive paste, and when you come in we will be happy to help you with that.

As a general rule, you should take care of your veneers just like your regular teeth. They are strong, but they’re also a little more brittle than regular teeth, which means that if you grind your teeth or bite hard things you may be at risk of damaging them. However, this isn’t a problem or concern for most people.
